Hello Vusi,
Thank you for sending out notice of your recent article, The White Establishment - Part II!
I went and looked it up on the web and read it yesterday. Yours is a clear line of evidence and reasoning that makes good sense. It is an awesome read to go from indentured servitude to slavery, then, almost by accident, to racial discrimination.
Another reason I enjoyed your article is because you did not play the ‘blame-game’! You rather played the role of a doctor in the process of doing a diagnosis without prejudice. Moreover, I noticed in your other articles that you are also involved in the healing of the problem though ceremony! That really focused my attention because I have been a participant in ceremonial healing of the planet and its people for many years believing that through ceremony we can establish a relationship that transcends race, color, creed, economic status, and even age.
When you pinpointed the Anglo-Saxon culture where this discrimination originated, it recalled for me a series of internet conversations prior to 2002 with two people, Adrian van der Meiden, a Dutchman from New Zealand and an all around 'savant', and Claude Rifat, an Algerian Frenchman and Biologist. It was
Claude's contention that the English, by virtue of their Protestant roots which begun almost at the same time as their colonization of the world, had far less give and take in their ideology, and, therefore, survival instinct, than their French/Spanish counterpart. They also had less humor! Over three or four years of writing about it, Claude had spelled out these differences and established a cultural imperative for the British to feel superior to the whole world, including the French/Spanish.
Claude, unfortunately, died in 2002 and that line of conversation ended with him.
Your article approaches this same attitude of superiority as being behind racism and discrimination from which the whole world, now anglicized by virtue of American economic and English language domination, suffers.
Unfortunately, knowing the cause will not at once reverse the product of it. However, the way world demographics are going, I have heard predictions that the "White Establishment" has its days numbered since within 25-50 years the power shift will turn in favor of none-white states or peoples and the "White Establishment" will no longer be able to defend its dominance with technology or force of arms. There is an unfortunate side effect to this demise, in that the discriminatory and racist ideology you describe will have found a new home within the emerging power cultures.
However, there is another, subtler side to these emerging power cultures. CBC Radio Ideas recently featured a documentary that looked at our world in terms of religious or faith-based cultures vs. secular ones. Naturally, the Eurocentric cultures are the ones where secular space dominates, and among these the Protestant countries like Germany and England (and the US , Australia , New Zealand ) are the ones where secular space is no longer linked with sacred space. In actual numbers, the cultures where secular space is separate from the sacred is a minute part of the world cultures where secular space is a function of the sacred space: most of the world's cultures are faith-based. The net result will be that when the power shift changes from the Anglo-Saxon model to some other model, it will become a part of a larger, sacred context (of whoever the dominant culture will become) and discrimination will adapt to the traditions of that new, sacred culture. I am not certain it will be much different from what we have now, but it will certainly favor people and cultures who can function within that particular sacred space.
In the current culture, you are right about the paternalistic effect of this Anglo-Saxon establishment. Everyone in my Hungarian family married an Anglo-Saxon in order to assimilate into that culture after we left Hungary . It worked exactly as you mentioned: the white privilege. However, my own mother, who re-married after her divorce, is now a widow at 85 and is finding that most of her previous "friends" are no longer interested in her. It is like she had lost her Anglo-Saxon 'protection'! Even worse for her, she did not lose her accent, so she suddenly stands out as a foreigner, an outsider.
Of course, there are advantages to being an outsider: they are the only ones to see the inside of the Insiders! They are the ones who write the best books!
I also have a long-time South African friend of Boer origin. He never married because, I suspect, he is a bit dark and probably he would have to give up his "deep, dark" secret that he has African blood in him. This scenario repeats all over the world. Even here, in the so-called "Scottish" highlands of Grey County a mere two or three hour drive from Toronto, every few miles there is a historic plaque to mark a site of interest for the Underground Railroad, a pre-1860 secret path of runaway American Slaves coming to Canada and "freedom". Their freedom consisted of living in subsistence hovels outside of established towns and villages. These plaques say "Darkies Corner", or "Negro Creek". One local farmer used to plow over an early black pioneer cemetery until, about 25 years ago, the descendents of those buried there found their ancestors' bones plowed up and scattered among the stones along the furrows. The township finally appropriated an acre of the cemetery and made it a historic landmark: it was archaeologically dug, the remaining bones properly interred and marked and now it is site of pilgrimage and an annual ceremony during Black Pioneer month.
The local Scots are not all that happy about this heritage, and about 15 years ago I found out why: a fellow poet was hired to edit a historical book of a local town and quit when the townspeople refused to include any traces of the Underground Railroad settlements all around them. They acknowledged that there were black workmen around a century and a half ago, and that black maids worked at the richer households, but that was all. No mention of where they came from, where they lived. She dug deeper and hear that the problem was that these good white folk at the time either married their black neighbours in a few cases, or, mostly, impregnated their female household workers and kept their children as part of the white household. It was no big deal back then. Now, 150 years later, this good West African blood is coursing through their veins and they are totally ashamed of it. There is a wall of silence even though everyone knows. I think these 'secrets' are the "white man's burden."
Anyway, Vusi, you write well and organize the evidence so it flows and makes good sense. Thanks for a good read!
